The Lawh wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum, an immersive celebration of the life, work, and legacy of M.F. Husain, was officially opened by Qatar Foundation in Education City in November 2025. This significant cultural institution is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the profound artistic contributions of the renowned Indian artist. Since its inauguration, the museum has quickly established itself as a prominent cultural landmark, welcoming more than 9,000 visitors who have come to explore its extensive collections and engaging exhibits. The museum offers a unique journey through Husain's artistic evolution, presenting his diverse body of work and the narratives behind his creative process. It aims to provide a full understanding of the artist's global impact and his deep connection to various cultural themes.
A Vision Brought to Life
The architectural design of the museum building itself is a testament to M.F. Husain's enduring vision. Its distinctive structure drew direct inspiration from a sketch M.F. Husain himself created for a cultural space in Doha, reflecting his personal aspirations for a venue dedicated to art and culture in the region. Esteemed architect Martand Khosla was instrumental in bringing this artistic vision to fruition, skillfully transforming Husain's initial concept into the magnificent physical structure that stands today. Khosla’s design successfully translates Husain's artistic sensibilities into a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment. The completed museum now features a well-appointed library, offering resources for scholarly research and general interest in art. It also includes a advanced auditorium, suitable for lectures, film screenings, and performances. A dedicated creativity hub provides an interactive space for artistic exploration and workshops, while a thoughtfully curated gift shop allows visitors to take a piece of their experience home. These integrated facilities collectively provide a full and enriching cultural experience for all who visit, extending beyond mere exhibition viewing.
Husain's Legacy in Qatar
M. F. Husain spent the later years of his life residing in Qatar, a period that profoundly influenced his artistic direction and output. During this significant chapter, he embarked on an ambitious and planned series of 99 paintings, a grand project intended to explore various facets of Arab and Islamic civilisation. This monumental undertaking reflected his deep engagement with the rich historical and cultural narratives of the region. Before his passing in 2011, Husain completed more than 30 works within this ambitious project, leaving behind a powerful testament to his artistic dedication and his commitment to cross-cultural dialogue. These artistic contributions highlight his deep engagement with the region's cultural heritage, offering unique perspectives on its history, traditions, and contemporary life through his distinctive artistic lens. The museum proudly houses many of these significant works, allowing visitors to witness this important phase of his career.
