Qatar Airways Cargo announced it will launch its first scheduled freighter service from Helsinki, Finland, next month, commencing September 2, 2026. This significant expansion marks a new chapter for the airline's operations in the Nordic region. The new once-weekly route will connect Doha, Budapest, and Helsinki before returning to Doha, establishing a direct and dedicated cargo link. This strategic service will utilize a Boeing 777 freighter, renowned for its impressive capacity and efficiency. The Boeing 777 freighter will provide a substantial 100 tonnes of export cargo capacity out of Helsinki each week, catering to the growing demands of Finnish and Nordic businesses.

Expanding Helsinki Operations

The introduction of this dedicated freighter service builds upon Qatar Airways Cargo's existing presence in Helsinki. The airline's existing seven weekly widebody passenger services on the Doha-Helsinki-Doha route already offer more than 70 tonnes of belly capacity weekly in each direction. These passenger flights were reinstated in July 2026, bolstering air connectivity for both passengers and cargo. Prior passenger operations on the Doha-Helsinki route had concluded in December 2022, making the current re-establishment and expansion particularly noteworthy. Helsinki is described by the airline as a strategic gateway for high-value and specialised cargo, facilitating key connections between Finnish and Nordic businesses and global supply chains. The new freighter service aims to further enhance these connections, complementing the existing passenger flight capacity and providing a strong solution for larger and more frequent cargo shipments. This dual approach ensures full coverage for various types of goods requiring air transport.

Key Cargo Flows and Services

The new freighter service is poised to support a diverse range of industries. Key export commodities transported from Finland will include high-tech products, electronics, industrial machinery and spare parts, pharmaceuticals, healthcare products, perishables, and e-commerce shipments. These goods will benefit from the direct and reliable air freight connection to Doha, a major global logistics hub. Conversely, import flows to Helsinki are primarily driven by electronics, consumer goods, automotive components, industrial equipment, and e-commerce goods, reflecting the diverse trade needs of the Finnish market.

To meet the specific requirements of these varied cargo types, Qatar Airways Cargo offers a suite of specialized services. These include TechLift for the secure handling of high-tech items, Pharma for the temperature-controlled transport of pharmaceutical and healthcare products, Fresh for the expedited delivery of perishables, and Courier services for urgent shipments. The airline also provides both scheduled and ad hoc trucking solutions to and from Helsinki, extending its reach beyond the airport. These services extend across Scandinavia and the Baltic region, coordinated through its extensive network of road feeder service (RFS) partners, ensuring broader connectivity and smooth door-to-door logistics for cargo operations throughout the region.

Broader Network Expansion

The launch of the Helsinki freighter service is part of Qatar Airways Cargo's broader strategy for network expansion and capacity enhancement. In July 2026, the airline expanded its network further by launching seasonal Boeing 777 freighter services. These new routes include Doha–London Heathrow–Paris–Doha and Doha–London Heathrow–Milan–Doha, significantly adding to the airline's European connectivity and offering more direct options for cargo customers. Beyond new routes, the carrier is also providing extra capacity for cargo customers on existing services to Dallas, Brussels, and Tokyo, enhancing its offerings in North America, Europe, and Asia respectively. Additionally, significant additional cargo space is being offered on links to Dhaka in Bangladesh and Entebbe in Uganda, strengthening the airline's presence and service capabilities in the vital markets of South Asia and Africa. These strategic expansions show Qatar Airways Cargo's commitment to bolstering global trade links and supporting its customers with full and reliable air freight solutions.
