Qatar Charity (QC) launched a free field medical campaign on May 4, 2026, in the Iriba area of Chad's Wadi Fira Region, near the border with Sudan. This significant initiative aims to provide essential basic healthcare services to approximately 2,300 Sudanese refugees who are currently residing in various camps within eastern Chad. The campaign, which was originally published on the same date, specifically targets these vulnerable populations displaced from Sudan, offering key medical support in a region with pressing humanitarian needs. The location in eastern Chad, particularly the Wadi Fira Region, is strategic due to its proximity to the Sudanese border, making it a primary destination for those seeking refuge. The campaign operates through a temporary health clinic, which is expected to run for several weeks, ensuring sustained medical intervention for the duration.

Services Offered

The medical campaign provides a full range of essential healthcare services tailored to meet the immediate and ongoing needs of Sudanese refugees. Services offered by the temporary health clinic include general medical examinations and diagnosis, which form the foundation of patient care. Medical staff meticulously measure vital signs and Body Mass Index (BMI) for each patient, providing critical data for accurate health assessments. Basic laboratory tests are also conducted on-site, enabling quicker and more precise diagnoses. Following diagnosis, medicines are dispensed for a variety of prevalent illnesses commonly affecting the refugee population, such as malaria, diabetes, high blood pressure, typhoid, and various respiratory diseases. This integrated approach ensures that patients receive both diagnosis and immediate treatment, addressing a wide spectrum of health concerns.

Clinic services further extend to specialized care, including maternal and child healthcare, addressing the unique and critical needs of mothers and young children within the refugee population. This focus aims to reduce mortality and morbidity rates among these vulnerable groups. Additionally, the campaign manages chronic non-communicable diseases, ensuring ongoing care and medication for individuals with long-term health conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which require consistent medical attention. The provision of these diverse services shows Qatar Charity's commitment to holistic health support for the displaced, providing a vital safety net in a challenging environment.

Operational Details

The temporary medical clinic established by Qatar Charity operates six days a week, ensuring consistent and accessible medical care for the refugee population throughout most of the week. This regular schedule is vital for providing sustained health support to a community with continuous medical needs. The clinic's operations are supported by a dedicated and multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and support staff, working tirelessly to deliver quality care. This team includes two doctors and two nurses, who are responsible for conducting medical examinations, providing accurate diagnoses, and administering patient care. A skilled laboratory technician conducts essential tests to aid in diagnosis, playing a key role in identifying illnesses. A pharmacy assistant diligently manages the dispensing of medicines, ensuring patients receive the correct treatments. Additionally, a project coordinator oversees the overall implementation and logistics of the campaign, while community health workers play a vital role in outreach and education within the refugee camps.

Qatar Charity has also acknowledged the critical support from local partners in Chad, without whom the campaign's success would be significantly hampered. The organization specifically commended the Secretary-General of the Iriba Center, Mr. Mando Ganda Stevi, for his invaluable contributions. Recognition was also extended to the area governor, Mr. Mohammed Saleh Haqar, for his administrative support and facilitation. Qatar Charity noted the cooperation of the Permanent Secretary-General of the National Commission for the Reception and Reintegration of Refugees and Returnees (CNARR), Mr. Idriss Mohamed Ali Abdallah, whose efforts are instrumental in coordinating refugee assistance. These partnerships show a collaborative approach to addressing the complex humanitarian challenges faced by Sudanese refugees in Chad.
