The Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar has announced the introduction of new subjects and updates to several existing subjects for the 2026–2027 academic year. This significant initiative aims to continuously develop curricula and facilitate a transition toward competency- and innovation-based education, according to the Ministry. The updates also focus on integrating advanced technology and artificial intelligence into the educational framework, reflecting global trends and future workforce needs. This full overhaul shows the Ministry's commitment to providing a forward-thinking and strong educational experience for all students.
Unified Science for Secondary Students
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education has developed science instruction for Grade 10 by introducing a unified course that combines physics, chemistry, and biology. This integrated science subject is designed to help students understand the connections between different scientific branches, fostering a holistic view of scientific principles. Ministry officials stated the new course prepares students effectively for the secondary stage of their education, providing a strong foundational understanding. The primary objective behind introducing this unified Grade 10 science subject is to attract more students to scientific pathways, encouraging greater participation in STEM fields. The Ministry aims to reduce the academic burden on students by consolidating content from multiple subjects and examinations into a single, full course. This change is part of broader curriculum updates for the 2026-2027 academic year, ensuring a more streamlined and interconnected learning experience.
New Life and Career Skills Subject
A new subject, "Life and Career Skills," has been developed and will be introduced across all primary, preparatory, and secondary educational stages. This subject is designed to equip students with practical knowledge and abilities essential for future success in both personal and professional life. The curriculum for Life and Career Skills incorporates various programs, including Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship, which aims to teach students about managing finances, making sound economic decisions, and fostering innovative ideas. It also features Information Literacy, focusing on critical evaluation, responsible consumption, and effective use of information in the digital age. Additionally, the subject includes a Family Literacy component, emphasizing skills relevant to family life, community engagement, and social responsibility.
Further differentiating its offerings, the new subject provides a Home Economics Programme specifically tailored for girls, while boys will engage in a Life Management Programme. Both programs are intended to develop essential practical skills relevant to their respective focus areas, preparing students for diverse aspects of daily living. For secondary school students, a dedicated Self-Development Programme is integrated into the curriculum. This program is designed to help students identify their interests, make informed decisions regarding their academic specializations, and prepare effectively for higher education and entry into the labor market. The introduction of Life and Career Skills marks a strategic move to ensure students are well-rounded and prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the modern world.
Self-Learning and Digital Certificates
The Ministry of Education and Higher Education is developing self-learning subjects for secondary school students, slated for introduction during the first semester of the 2026–2027 academic year. These subjects are designed to offer specialized learning opportunities beyond the core curriculum, allowing students to explore areas of interest in greater depth. The self-learning offerings will include Artificial Intelligence, developed in collaboration with INJAZ Qatar, providing students with foundational knowledge in this rapidly evolving field. Additionally, Economics and Commerce will be introduced with support from the Qatar Development Bank, offering insights into financial markets and business principles. Data Science will be offered in partnership with Cisco Academy, equipping students with critical skills in data analysis and interpretation. Upon successfully completing these self-learning subjects, students will be eligible to obtain accredited digital certificates, providing formal recognition of their acquired skills and knowledge and enhancing their profiles for future academic and career pursuits.
