Qatar Museums and the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) signed a five-year cooperation agreement on Thursday in Doha. The landmark deal, formalizing a commitment to cultural exchange and preservation, was signed by HE Dr Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, Minister of State for International Cooperation and Board Member of Qatar Museums, alongside ACDF's Chairperson Gayane Umerova. Ms. Umerova emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating that "the agreement marks a key milestone in building a sustainable future for artists and communities." This strategic partnership is designed to significantly strengthen cultural ties between the State of Qatar and the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Deepening Cultural Ties

The full five-year agreement is structured to integrate human capital development with direct support for the creative economy across both nations. This ambitious goal will be achieved through a multi-faceted approach, including shared research initiatives, collaborative artistic projects, and joint efforts in heritage conservation. A key focus of the partnership is the restoration and protection of Islamic cultural sites, a critical area where expert knowledge exchange between Qatar Museums and the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation will play a key role. This shared commitment to preserving historical and artistic legacies shows the depth of the collaboration.

Ongoing Cultural Exchange

The vibrant cultural exchange between Qatar and Uzbekistan is already evident in various ongoing initiatives. The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha is currently hosting the "Uzbekistan: Heritage in Motion" exhibition, which opened on September 3 and will run through November 28. This exhibition offers visitors a deep dive into various aspects of Uzbek culture and history, showcasing its rich artistic traditions and historical narratives. Presented alongside "Uzbekistan: Heritage in Motion" is the "Ektashif Uzbekistan Exhibition," which features a unique collection of original works by Qatari artists. These artworks were specifically created following an immersive cultural trip undertaken by the artists to significant Uzbek cities, including the historic centers of Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara, reflecting their personal experiences and artistic interpretations. Further demonstrating the ongoing cultural dialogue and artistic collaboration, Uzbekistan also actively participated in the inaugural Design Doha Biennial, noting its contemporary design landscape. These recent and ongoing events collectively show the existing artistic and historical connections between the two nations, providing a strong foundation for the recently signed cooperation agreement and its future endeavors.

Future Investments and Vision

The agreement establishes a long-term institutional framework meticulously designed to deepen and sustain cultural ties between Qatar and Uzbekistan. This framework is expected to facilitate continuous collaboration across various cultural domains, ensuring a lasting impact. Further cementing this commitment and demonstrating tangible support, the Qatar Fund for Development pledged a significant grant in late 2024. The fund committed a substantial $4.175 million towards the vital restoration of the historic Bibi-Khanym Mosque complex in Samarkand, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This substantial investment shows a shared dedication to preserving invaluable cultural heritage, moving beyond artistic exchange to include significant, concrete heritage conservation efforts. This financial commitment notes the practical support underpinning the cooperative vision between the two nations, ensuring that cultural preservation is a cornerstone of their partnership.

Voices on Partnership

Joint programming under the new agreement will encompass a wide array of initiatives aimed at fostering artistic growth and professional development. These include dedicated artist residencies, full professional training programs specifically designed for cultural professionals from both countries, and collaborative exhibitions showcasing the diverse artistic talent from both nations. These initiatives are strategically designed to facilitate strong knowledge exchange and stimulate artistic development, creating a dynamic environment for collaboration between Qatar Museums and the Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation. The partnership is set to create lasting opportunities for artists, cultural practitioners, and the public, enriching the cultural landscapes of both Qatar and Uzbekistan.
