Ashghal completes phase 7 of its Western Areas Road Improvement Project, enhancing roads in Al Sailiya, Al Gharrafa, Al Karaana, Al Nasraniya, and…
The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has completed all activities for the seventh phase of its Western Areas Road Improvement Project, the Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported on June 15. This significant milestone marks the successful conclusion of extensive infrastructure work aimed at enhancing connectivity and service provision in several key areas. The project targeted road enhancements across Al Sailiya, Al Gharrafa, Al Karaana, Al Nasraniya, and Meseimeer, demonstrating Ashghal's commitment to improving the nation's transportation network.
Hassan Al Naama, a Project Engineer in the Western Areas Section of Ashghal's Roads Projects Department, stated, "The project encompassed Al Sailiya, Al Gharrafa, Al Karaana, Al Nasraniya, and Meseimeer." He elaborated on the scope of work, adding that 39 kilometers of roads were improved, alongside the installation of roughly 285 street lighting poles. The project also featured new footpaths, road signs and lane markings, and the creation of 587 parking spots, all designed to improve both vehicular and pedestrian safety and convenience. The full nature of these improvements notes Ashghal's integrated approach to urban development, addressing multiple facets of public infrastructure.
Project Scope and Enhancements
The project included the improvement of 39 kilometers of existing roads, transforming them into more efficient and safer routes for commuters. Ashghal also oversaw the installation of approximately 285 new street lighting poles across the project area, significantly enhancing visibility and safety during nighttime hours. Significant enhancements involved the introduction of new footpaths, which provide dedicated and safe spaces for pedestrians, updated road signs, and clear lane markings to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety. These measures are key for reducing accidents and streamlining daily commutes. Additionally, the initiative created 587 new parking spots to address community needs, alleviating parking congestion and improving accessibility for residents and visitors alike. A key component of the project was the construction of a new road, extending over 15 kilometers, specifically designed to enhance access to Al Kharaij Beach. This new artery is expected to facilitate tourism and recreational activities, offering improved connectivity to a popular destination.
Local Content and Infrastructure Focus
Substantial infrastructure tasks were performed as part of the project, including the installation of surface and groundwater drainage systems, stormwater networks, and sewage facilities. These critical underground infrastructure developments are essential for sustainable urban planning, preventing flooding and ensuring proper waste management. Hassan Al Naama stated these efforts also encompassed land leveling and site preparation at various sites, laying the groundwork for future development and ensuring the longevity of the installed infrastructure. Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported that Qatari-made materials and products were extensively utilized throughout the project. This focus on local content resulted in approximately 85% of the total project work being comprised of locally sourced materials and labor, according to QNA. This impressive percentage shows a strategic push to support local industries and contribute to the national economy, aligning with Qatar's self-sufficiency goals. These infrastructure enhancements and the significant use of local resources show the project's broader economic and developmental impact, fostering economic growth within the country.
Broader Development Goals
The initiative forms a component of Ashghal's broader strategy to enhance road systems and infrastructure throughout Qatar. This strategic alignment aims to support the country's development objectives by improving connectivity and facilitating easier access across various regions, thereby contributing to the overall quality of life for residents. The full nature of the project, including road construction, lighting installations, and drainage systems, reflects a commitment to modernizing essential services and building a resilient infrastructure network. Such projects are integral to Ashghal's ongoing efforts to deliver strong and sustainable infrastructure solutions that serve the evolving needs of communities and contribute to the nation's overall growth, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. The successful completion of this seventh phase further solidifies Ashghal's role in driving forward the nation's infrastructure development agenda.
