Qatar Condemns Israeli Flotilla Interception as Violation of International Law
Qatar condemns Israel's interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, calling it a violation of international law and an extension of the Gaza blockade.
The State of Qatar condemned on Thursday the Israeli Occupation’s aggression against the Global Sumud Flotilla, calling the interception a blatant violation of international law and maritime security. Qatar considered the action an extension of Israel's unjust blockade of the Gaza Strip. The condemnation followed the Israeli Navy's interception of over 20 ships and around 175 activists on Wednesday night, April 29, 2026, in international waters off Greece’s Peloponnese Peninsula. Flotilla organizers stated Israel "kidnapped" 211 of the 400 activists, while Israel’s Foreign Ministry reported 175 people were detained, describing them as "professional provocateurs." This report was published on April 30, 2026.
International Condemnation Mounts
Italy called for the immediate release of Italian nationals who were on board the flotilla. Germany, in a joint statement with Italy, expressed significant concern and called for international law to be respected. Spain’s Foreign Ministry "energetically condemns" Israel’s seizure of the flotilla, which was carrying Spanish nationals. Madrid subsequently summoned Israel’s charge d’affaires to convey its protest against the detention of the vessels. Turkiye’s Foreign Ministry condemned Israel’s seizure of the boats as "an act of piracy," with Reuters reporting that Turkey also denounced the interception as a violation of international law that jeopardized navigational safety.
Amnesty International called for the immediate and unconditional release of the detained activists, stating, "The crew of the intercepted vessels must be immediately and unconditionally released." Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed the necessity for the international community to stand firmly in solidarity to compel the occupation to open the crossings, remove illegal restrictions on aid flow, and protect the Palestinian people. The Ministry affirmed that the Israeli occupation’s approach of besieging the Palestinian people by closing crossings, attacking humanitarian aid convoys, and using food as a weapon will exacerbate the tragic humanitarian situation, particularly in the Gaza Strip. The MFA stated on X/Twitter on Thursday, April 30, 2026, that the vessels and activists were en route to Israel on Israeli ships. Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis confirmed that 50 ships were sailing off the Peloponnese coast towards Crete, shadowed by vessels of the Israeli navy and Greek coastguard. The Board of Peace statement added that Hamas’s theft of aid has been reduced from 90% to less than 1%.
Israel Defends Blockade Enforcement
Israel’s Foreign Ministry stated its forces acted to prevent the breach of a lawful blockade, asserting the flotilla was intercepted early in its transit due to the large number of vessels, the risk of escalation, and the need to prevent such a breach. Defense Minister Israel Katz noted a provision of the Counterterrorism Law authorizes the seizure of ships and other property intended for use in terror activity, adding that the Global Sumud Flotilla "violates UN Resolution 2803, which stipulated that aid to Gaza should enter through accepted official channels." The Foreign Ministry called the flotilla organisers "professional provocateurs" and stated its forces acted lawfully, asserting on X on Wednesday night, April 29, 2026, that Hamas was the driving force behind the 'flotilla provocation' to sabotage US President Donald Trump’s peace plans for Gaza. The MFA further asserted the flotilla carried no humanitarian aid, characterizing it as a "pleasure cruise" after an initial inspection reportedly found drugs and contraceptives. The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated, "Like previous provocations, this is nothing but a PR stunt; a provocation without humanitarian aid. As international media have exposed, these are professional provocateurs on pleasure cruises, addicted to self-promotion." Reports indicated the operation was carried out in international waters peacefully and without casualties. ANSA news agency cited sources among the organisers saying 24 Italians had been detained. The Gaza Board of Peace condemned the flotilla as "the performative love-boat activism of people who know nothing of and care even less for the condition of Gazans."
Flotilla's Mission and Organizers' Claims
The ships comprised part of a second Global Sumud Flotilla attempting to breach an Israeli blockade, having sailed from the Spanish port of Barcelona on April 12, 2026. Fifty-six vessels had embarked from Italy on Sunday, April 27, 2026, aiming to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza. During the interception of the 56-strong activist fleet, the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) stated that the engines and navigation systems of some remaining vessels were allegedly damaged, and Israel intercepted 22 out of 58 aid ships traveling through international waters bound for Gaza. Leading up to the boarding reports, activist ships were allegedly approached by Israeli fast boats pointing lasers and semi-automatic assault weapons. Greenpeace stated on social media that individuals identifying as the Israeli Navy contacted the flotilla, demanding a course change, and their communications were allegedly jammed. GSF organizers called the seizure "piracy" and "the unlawful seizure of human beings on the open sea." They added, "This is piracy. This is the unlawful seizure of human beings on the open sea near Crete, an assertion that Israel can operate with total impunity, far beyond its own borders, with no consequences." In October, the Israeli Navy halted another GSF flotilla, arresting climate activist Greta Thunberg and around 450 sailors. Hamas condemned the interception, accusing Israel of committing a crime without accountability. According to Marinetraffic.com, Greenpeace’s Arctic Sunrise was located west of Crete at the time of the alleged raid. The Board of Peace statement claimed that aid to Gaza has risen significantly since the ceasefire, with food aid reaching three times as many people as before and nutrition improving dramatically, according to the UN.
