South Korea and Qatar discussed cooperation in energy and other advanced industries, the Yonhap News Agency reported on Monday, June 15, 2026. The discussions between the two nations were announced by Seoul's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources. South Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan met with Qatari Energy Minister Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi in Qatar to advance these discussions, focusing particularly on strengthening energy security and expanding economic collaboration. Kim Jung-kwan stated, "Amid growing geopolitical uncertainties, the strong trust and cooperation between South Korea and Qatar carry significant meaning in ensuring stable energy supplies and global supply chains." He added that South Korea "will continue to maintain close high-level communication with Qatar and expand cooperation into future growth engines."

Energy Cooperation Reaffirmed

Discussions between South Korea and Qatar occurred amid lingering supply disruptions caused by geopolitical uncertainties. These global disruptions have noted the critical importance of reliable energy partnerships. Qatar had declared force majeure on its long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply contracts with South Korea and other countries in March, following damage to its facilities from Iran's missile attacks. This declaration showed the vulnerability of global energy supplies to regional conflicts. During the meetings, South Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan specifically asked for Qatar's proactive support for South Korean companies seeking to participate in new energy plant projects slated for launch after the conflict. He emphasized the importance of maintaining strong bilateral ties to navigate the current geopolitical landscape. Kim Jung-kwan reiterated, "Amid growing geopolitical uncertainties, the strong trust and cooperation between South Korea and Qatar carry significant meaning in ensuring stable energy supplies and global supply chains." He further added that South Korea "will continue to maintain close high-level communication with Qatar and expand cooperation into future growth engines."

Expanding Beyond Energy

The two sides committed to broadening bilateral economic ties beyond the traditional energy sector, aiming to include shipbuilding and other emerging industries. This expansion reflects a shared vision to diversify their economic relationship and explore new avenues for growth. To this end, South Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan also met with Qatari Industry Minister Sheikh Faisal bin Thani bin Faisal Al Thani to discuss these expanded areas of collaboration. Their discussions focused on identifying specific projects and initiatives that could foster cooperation in sectors like advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, and green industries. Kim Jung-kwan stated that "amid growing geopolitical uncertainties, the strong trust and cooperation between South Korea and Qatar carry significant meaning in ensuring stable energy supplies and global supply chains." He added that South Korea "will continue to maintain close high-level communication with Qatar and expand cooperation into future growth engines."

Ministerial Statements

Seoul's Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources announced the discussions between South Korea and Qatar, providing details on the outcomes of the high-level meetings. The ministry reported that the two nations affirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation across various sectors, signaling a strong and forward-looking partnership.

Qatar, for its part, reaffirmed its commitment to giving top priority to South Korea in the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and condensate. This pledge was made based on the strong mutual trust established between the two countries, according to the ministry, showing the strategic importance of South Korea as a key energy partner for Qatar. The commitment is expected to contribute significantly to South Korea's energy security in the face of ongoing global uncertainties.
