Qatar Museums has announced that Doha will welcome a permanent pavilion devoted to Gerhard Richter this autumn, marking a significant cultural milestone for the city and the region. The prestigious institution confirmed that a permanent pavilion dedicated to the acclaimed artist Gerhard Richter will open its doors in Doha later this year. This ambitious project, which will be designed by Richter himself in collaboration with the renowned Selldorf Architects, represents a substantial and thoughtful addition to Doha's burgeoning cultural landscape. The initiative shows Qatar's commitment to fostering a vibrant arts scene and providing unique platforms for artistic expression.

Gerhard Richter, one of the most influential artists of our time, described Doha as "the right place and the only place" for the new structure, a sentiment that notes his personal connection and dedication to this specific project. His direct involvement in the architectural vision for the space, in collaboration with Selldorf Architects, shows the profound artistic integrity and personal commitment driving the creation of this unique pavilion. This collaboration ensures that the building itself will be an extension of Richter’s artistic philosophy, meticulously crafted to complement and enhance the artworks it will house.

Pavilion Design and Contents

The building will occupy the city’s MIA Park, situated prominently outside the Museum of Islamic Art, placing it within a distinguished cultural precinct. This hexagonal pavilion is specifically designed to house an impressive collection of sculptures and paintings by Gerhard Richter, offering visitors a full insight into his diverse artistic practice. The design of the pavilion itself is a work of art, with its exterior incorporating repeating designs derived from Richter’s 2011 artist’s book, Patterns. These intricate patterns reflect the artist's ongoing exploration of abstraction, repetition, and the transformative potential of digital manipulation within his oeuvre. The visual interplay of these patterns on the exterior promises a captivating first impression, setting the tone for the artistic experience within.

Outside the structure, a compelling stone sculpture titled Brunnen (Well) will be installed. This outdoor piece adds another significant dimension to the pavilion’s artistic offerings, serving as a prominent focal point in its immediate surroundings and inviting contemplation before entry. Inside, visitors will encounter the artist’s Strip Tower, a purpose-built version of his 2023 ceramic outdoor work of the same title. This indoor iteration of the Strip Tower exemplifies Richter's ongoing engagement with architectural and sculptural forms, showcasing his ability to translate concepts across different scales and materials.

Additionally, the interior space will feature three large "Strip" paintings. These monumental works are known for their intricate compositions, often created by digitally manipulating photographs of Richter's earlier abstract paintings and then meticulously slicing and reassembling them into new, complex horizontal formations. These paintings offer a mesmerizing experience, inviting viewers to delve into the artist's process of deconstruction and re-creation. Completing the interior display are two floor-to-ceiling mirror works, which are characteristic of Richter's profound explorations into perception, reflection, and the viewer's interaction with the artwork. The combination of these diverse pieces provides a full view of Richter's multifaceted artistic practice, encompassing painting, sculpture, and conceptual art within a single, dedicated space, designed to immerse the audience in his distinctive artistic universe.

Artist's Vision and Collaboration

The building’s strategic location within Doha’s MIA Park, outside the Museum of Islamic Art, ensures its prominence within a significant cultural landscape. This area is also poised to host the Rubaiya Qatar, a new quadrennial event showcasing contemporary art from across the globe, further solidifying Doha's position as a global arts hub. Gerhard Richter reiterated his belief that Doha is “the right place and the only place” for the structure, emphasizing his profound personal connection and specific vision for this project in the Qatari capital.

The artist recalled that a key 2013 trip to Doha, made while he was two years into creating his new "Strip" paintings, sparked the initial idea for the permanent pavilion. This visit proved to be a catalyst, inspiring the concept for a dedicated space that could house and present his evolving body of work. Selldorf Architects is collaborating on the design, bringing their extensive expertise to the project. The firm has a distinguished portfolio, including critically acclaimed renovations of New York’s Frick Collection and London’s National Gallery, demonstrating their proficiency in working with culturally significant institutions. Selldorf Architects is currently involved in forthcoming renovations at the Louvre in Paris, showing their international reputation and capability in delivering world-class architectural solutions for art spaces.

Inaugural Art Quadrennial

The pavilion is scheduled to open its doors to the public on November 20, marking a highly anticipated event in the international art calendar. This significant opening will precede the inaugural Rubaiya Qatar, a new art quadrennial that promises to be a landmark event for contemporary art. The Rubaiya Qatar, which is a new quadrennial that will feature contemporary art from around the world, is set to commence on November 21 and will continue through April 2027. This timing positions the Gerhard Richter Pavilion as a central attraction during Doha's vibrant period of artistic celebration, drawing art enthusiasts and critics from across the globe.
