A mangrove expert from Thailand has been selected to serve as a consultant for a mangrove restoration project in Qatar, announced the Royal Thai Embassy in Doha in a press statement. This collaboration represents an important milestone in bilateral cooperation between Qatar and Thailand in the field of sustainable development. The Embassy stated that this collaboration marks an important milestone in bilateral cooperation between Qatar and Thailand concerning sustainable development. "This progress did not happen by chance," the Embassy said, adding, "For more than a year, the Embassy has worked to position Thailand as a trusted partner for Qatar on environmental sustainability, laying the foundation for practical collaboration that benefits both countries." The Embassy noted, "The foundation for this initiative was laid in 2025 through two Embassy-led visits by Thai experts to Qatar." This strategic effort notes a shared commitment to addressing environmental challenges through international cooperation.

Building Bilateral Ties

The Royal Thai Embassy in Doha stated the foundation for the initiative was laid in 2025 through two Embassy-led visits by Thai experts to Qatar. These visits were instrumental in fostering direct engagement and knowledge exchange. The Embassy added that the first visit was held from February 16 to 19, 2025. During this visit, a seminar entitled “Mangrove Conservation in Qatar: Towards a Practicable Action Plan” was co-hosted on February 17, 2025, with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), ESC, and Earthna Centre for a Sustainable Future. The seminar, which brought together key stakeholders, was held at Qatar Foundation. The visiting delegation also toured mangrove conservation sites, agricultural plantations, and eco-tourism locations in Al-Thakira and Al-Ruwais. These site visits provided the Thai experts with first-hand insights into Qatar's environmental landscape and conservation needs.

The second visit by Thai experts occurred from April 22 to 23, 2025, coinciding with the Earthna Summit 2025. As an official side event of the summit, a seminar entitled “From Local to Global: Thailand’s Sustainability and Eco-Tourism Journeys” was co-hosted. This seminar noted Thailand’s sustainability frameworks, eco-tourism models, environmental conservation efforts, and community-driven development initiatives, showcasing the country's extensive experience. The Embassy also organized an exhibition at the Earthna Village 2025 to showcase Thailand’s progress in sustainable development, further solidifying its position as a leader in environmental stewardship. These events served to deepen understanding and identify areas for future collaboration between the two nations.

Qatari Delegation Explores Thai Expertise

Senior Qatari researchers recently undertook a five-day working visit to Thailand’s mangrove conservation sites. The visit was organized by the Royal Thai Embassy in Doha in June 2026, in cooperation with the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA). This initiative aimed to facilitate direct learning and exchange of best practices. Prof Dr Jassim Al-Khayat and Prof Dr Vethamony Ponnumony, two senior researchers from Qatar University’s Environmental Science Centre (ESC), visited Thailand during this period. Their participation showed the academic and scientific commitment to the collaborative effort.

The delegation's itinerary included Thailand’s coastal conservation sites, research centers, and government agencies responsible for marine and coastal resources. This full tour allowed the Qatari researchers to observe various successful conservation models and management strategies firsthand. This visit marked the first major step towards deeper cooperation on sustainable development and mangrove restoration between Thailand and Qatar, setting a precedent for future joint ventures. The direct engagement between experts from both countries is expected to accelerate the development of effective restoration techniques tailored to Qatar's specific environmental conditions.

Shared Vision for Sustainability

The collaborative efforts between Thailand and Qatar in mangrove restoration show a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and bilateral cooperation. The Royal Thai Embassy in Doha has actively facilitated these exchanges, positioning Thailand as a key partner for Qatar in ecological initiatives. This partnership builds upon detailed discussions and site visits, including the participation of senior researchers like Prof Dr Jassim Al-Khayat and Prof Dr Vethamony Ponnumony from Qatar University’s Environmental Science Centre (ESC). The exchanges, which included seminars and tours of conservation sites in both nations, have created a strong framework for practical collaboration. Both countries aim to leverage their respective expertise to advance sustainable development goals, particularly in protecting and restoring vital coastal ecosystems. The ongoing engagement reflects a strategic alignment in addressing climate change and biodiversity conservation, contributing to global efforts for environmental protection. This continued dialogue and cooperation are key for developing innovative solutions for ecological preservation.
