Qatar's Public Works Authority, Ashghal, has completed the second package of road and infrastructure development projects in Al Kharaitiyat and Izghawa. The completion marks a significant upgrade to the area's infrastructure, providing modern amenities and improved connectivity for residents. This development follows a strategic plan to enhance services and connectivity within these residential zones, contributing to the overall urban development goals of Qatar. The successful delivery of this phase shows Ashghal's commitment to advancing public infrastructure projects that directly benefit local communities.

Extensive Infrastructure Improvements Delivered

The second package of the project delivered full services for 1514 residential plots designated for citizens, ensuring that a substantial number of households will benefit from the upgraded facilities. These improvements are designed to meet the growing demands of the community and enhance the quality of life for its inhabitants. Works completed within this phase included approximately 46 kilometers of roads, which were meticulously equipped with various traffic safety elements to ensure secure and efficient transportation. The new road network is designed to facilitate smoother traffic flow and reduce congestion within the neighborhoods.

As part of the road network enhancements, three signalized intersections and four pedestrian crossings were constructed to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety, particularly in high-traffic areas. These additions are key for managing vehicle movement and providing safe passage for pedestrians. The project also focused on public amenities and utilities, recognizing their importance for a functional and comfortable living environment. A total of 2643 lighting poles were installed throughout the area, significantly enhancing visibility and security during nighttime hours. Alongside this, the provision of 9875 parking spaces for residents and visitors addresses a critical need in urban planning, ensuring convenient access and reducing parking challenges.

Green spaces and landscaping were developed across an area spanning 37,500 square meters, contributing to the aesthetic appeal of the neighborhoods and providing residents with recreational areas. These green initiatives are part of a broader effort to create sustainable and pleasant urban environments. Connectivity for non-vehicular transport was also robustly addressed, with 85 kilometers of shared pedestrian and cycling paths constructed. These paths promote active lifestyles and offer safe alternatives for commuting and leisure activities, fostering a healthier community.

Infrastructure for water management was a key component, including the implementation of a surface and groundwater drainage network extending 51 kilometers. This extensive network is vital for managing rainwater and preventing flooding, particularly during seasonal weather events, thus protecting property and ensuring public safety. An additional 21 kilometers of treated sewage effluent network was installed, contributing to sustainable water management practices by allowing for the reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation and other non-potable uses. For essential services, a potable water network of 6.6 kilometers was implemented, ensuring a reliable supply of clean drinking water to all serviced plots. The project further integrated 24.4 kilometers of electricity lines, providing a stable and efficient power supply to the newly developed areas. Additionally, 7.3 kilometers of telecommunication networks were established, ensuring modern communication services for residents and businesses. These full utility installations underpin the functionality and livability of the upgraded areas.

Broader Development Context

The project forms part of a larger initiative comprising four development packages, which are designed to serve a total of 5384 residential plots upon their full completion. This phased approach allows for systematic development and ensures that infrastructure improvements are rolled out efficiently across the designated areas. Ashghal completed the third package of the Al Kharaitiyat and Izghawa infrastructure upgrade in early 2025, demonstrating continuous progress in this extensive development plan. Eng. Abdullah Al-Neaimi, Head of Northern Areas Section at the Roads Projects Department, stated that the project is part of four development packages that will serve 5384 residential plots upon completion, noting the significant scale and impact of this undertaking. Al-Neaimi also confirmed that Ashghal completed the third package in early 2025, adding that work on the first and fourth packages remains ongoing. This phased approach shows a continuous effort to enhance infrastructure and services across the designated residential areas, ensuring long-term benefits for the community. The overall vision is to create fully integrated and modern living environments for citizens in Al Kharaitiyat and Izghawa.

Commitment to Local Components

The second package of the Al Kharaitiyat and Izghawa infrastructure upgrade utilized local components and products for up to 70 percent of its materials. This emphasis on domestic sourcing supported local industries and contributed significantly to the national economy, aligning with broader governmental strategies to enhance self-sufficiency in development projects. The integration of local materials spanned various aspects of the project, including road construction, utility networks, and public amenities, demonstrating a full commitment to local content. This approach showed Ashghal's dedication to leveraging Qatar's industrial capabilities and fostering economic growth within the country while executing major infrastructure initiatives. By prioritizing local suppliers and manufacturers, Ashghal not only ensures the quality and availability of materials but also strengthens the domestic supply chain and creates employment opportunities. This strategic decision reflects a national commitment to sustainable development and economic diversification.
