HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, delivered this statement at the UN headquarters in New York during a special meeting of the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. The gathering marked the 78th anniversary of the Nakba. Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani delivered Qatar's statement, showing the nation's consistent stance on the Palestinian question. The special meeting, held at the UN headquarters in New York, provided a platform for member states to address the ongoing implications of the Nakba, which occurred 78 years ago.
Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani affirmed, "The State of Qatar affirmed that recognition of the Nakba is an indispensable foundation for any just, full, and lasting peaceful solution to the Palestinian issue." She added, "Qatar takes pride in being among the sponsors of this resolution, as recognition of the Nakba is essential for achieving a just, full, and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue." Qatar's Permanent Representative also noted "Qatar's commitment that the names of all Palestinian child martyrs will not be forgotten, describing them as victims of a continuing Nakba, whose suffering cannot be ignored by the international community." This emphasis on the historical event shows Qatar's belief that acknowledging the Nakba is a critical step towards reconciliation and a durable peace. The statement reiterated Qatar's unwavering support for the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights.
Qatar's Core Demands for Peace
Qatar affirmed that recognition of the Nakba is an essential foundation for achieving a just, full, and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue. The State of Qatar reiterated its principled and steadfast support for the Palestinian cause and the resilience of the Palestinian people. This support is based on international legitimacy and the two-state solution framework. Qatar's commitment to these principles was clearly articulated by its Permanent Representative.
HE the Permanent Representative outlined several key demands, stating: "The need to guarantee Palestinian self-determination, establish an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, end occupation and settlement activities, halt Israel's illegal practices in occupied territories, and ensure the right of return for Palestinian refugees in accordance with international law." Qatar specifically emphasized the necessity of guaranteeing Palestinian self-determination. It also stressed the importance of establishing an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem designated as its capital. Qatar showed the need to end all occupation and settlement activities. The country called for a halt to Israel's illegal practices in occupied territories and noted the importance of ensuring the right of return for Palestinian refugees, in accordance with international law. These demands collectively form the bedrock of Qatar's vision for a full resolution to the conflict, reflecting international consensus on key aspects of the two-state solution.
Condemnation and Ceasefire Calls
Qatar condemned Israel's illegal decisions regarding the West Bank, which include the reclassification of Palestinian land as 'state land'. These actions, according to Qatar, accelerate settlement activity, enact a law allowing the death penalty, and restrict freedom of worship in occupied Jerusalem. The State of Qatar views these measures as detrimental to peace efforts and a violation of international law.
The State of Qatar also stressed the importance of fully implementing the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. Qatar further emphasized the necessity of opening crossings to ensure that humanitarian aid can be delivered sustainably and without obstruction. This insistence on uninterrupted aid flow reflects Qatar's concern for the humanitarian situation in Gaza and its consistent advocacy for civilian protection. Ensuring the full implementation of the ceasefire is seen as key for de-escalation and for addressing the urgent needs of the population.
Support for UNRWA and International Law
Qatar expressed its commitment to politically, diplomatically, and financially support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), enabling it to fulfill its mandate to serve the Palestinian people. UNRWA's mandate aligns with General Assembly Resolution 302 (IV). This commitment shows Qatar's recognition of UNRWA's vital role in providing essential services to Palestinian refugees. The nation's multi-faceted support aims to ensure the agency's continued operations amidst challenging circumstances.
HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, stated that Qatar "takes pride in being among the sponsors of this resolution, as recognition of the Nakba is essential for achieving a just, full, and lasting solution to the Palestinian issue." Qatar also noted the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2803. The nation affirmed its pride in being among the sponsors of General Assembly Resolution 79/82. The emphasis on these resolutions demonstrates Qatar's dedication to upholding international legal frameworks as a basis for resolving the Palestinian issue.
Commitment to Palestinian Resilience
Qatar reaffirmed its commitment that the names of all Palestinian child martyrs will not be forgotten. The nation also reiterated its firm commitment to the peace council from the first day of mediation efforts.
