Background of Relationship
The recent messages of condolence from the United Arab Emirates to Qatar follow a period of complex regional relations. In 2017, the UAE, alongside Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Egypt, initiated a diplomatic boycott and blockade against Qatar. This action severed diplomatic, trade, and travel ties, citing Qatar's alleged support for extremist groups and its close relations with Iran. Qatar consistently denied these accusations. The dispute lasted for three and a half years, significantly impacting regional cooperation and bilateral relationships. A resolution to the GCC crisis was reached in January 2021 at the Al-Ula summit in Saudi Arabia. This agreement led to the restoration of full diplomatic and economic ties between Qatar and the blockading nations, including the UAE. Since then, efforts have been underway to normalize relations and foster renewed cooperation among the Gulf states. This exchange of condolences suggests a continued push towards strengthened ties following the reconciliation.
Significance of Gestures
The messages of condolence from the United Arab Emirates to Qatar carry significance in the context of improving regional ties. Following the resolution of the Gulf Cooperation Council crisis, such high-level communications between the rulers of the Emirates and the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, show a continued path towards normalized relations. The expressions of sympathy from Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mu'alla, and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, along with their respective Crown Princes and Deputy Rulers, reflect a commitment to diplomatic engagement. These gestures, extended during a time of personal loss for Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, suggest a strengthening of bilateral relations between the two Gulf states.
